.....
It's been 6 years since I came back to Hong Kong ; 6 years since we accidently found this little shop at No.38 Peel St.
At that moment, Peel St., was a quiet street with not many strangers…and yes, there was no music…
“Joyce Is Not Here - artists' bar & cafe” started as a “concept café of art, design, film, good living style, etc”…we had a light fire-rated concrete wall selving unit and originally designed mannequin leg tables…and multi-task designed chairs…
The coffee machine costed us a lot and I remember the UK coffee teacher telling me how to make a good coffee:
“Right time, Fresh beans, with a Good Heart…”
The first month we made HK$6000 business, Rob spent most of the time sitting outside in his Scottish Kilt uniform drinking coffee and waiting for the people come in…
6 years.
“you had me at hello”
--- yes, until we met you, after that all of you made this little street become a little trade mark of the HK underground music scene; helped this little street to be introduced on Lonely Planet, Time out, all kinds of travel magazines, and medias…
Now we have "Macumba", we have "Peel Fresco Music Lounge", "Le Moment", "Chocoholic"….from every door of every bar or restaurant, or gallery, you can hear music, you can see nice artwork, you can meet your friends, and you can receive a smile….
Now, "Joyce is not here artists bar & café" is going to celebrate her 6th Anniverary on July 1st.
We invite all of you to join us.
All of you, I really wish that all of you who I have met here, could really come.
But, the truth is, some of you have already gone to other countries…some of you have even gone to another world…
We experienced many things in this petite place…
People met each other, fall in love, have their nice engagement party here; People deliver their babies and then bring the babies here to listen to the poetry reading;
People came to HK because of a good job but lost it and then needed to fight to continue their lives here;
People have had serious disease and we looked at their weak body sitting outside of our place, and remembered how strong they once were…
People broke up but after many years they met once again in the same place, they hold hands and become friends…
People introduce their mom, son, all their relatives and tell them to come here when they visit HK…etc…
It's like a little window to the world, here we meet, we love, and we exist with each other…
Well, I am gonna sign another few years lease with my landlord, even though the rent will be raised a lot. I know that for me, for all of you, it is not only a place to buy a beer, it is our living room. And from this place, we have grown, it has been a place to learn, to develop, a place to go when we feel happy or sad, when we feel love or we hatred…but no matter what, we feel real & relaxed here.
Let’s enjoy what we have, while we are still here, on Peel St., or in this world….

One last thing, I'd like to use two songs to finish my writing. One is a Chinese song sang by Pu Shu < those flowers...>, another was written by my friend Mark Cottrell , thank you Mark, we are not that famous but we very much appreciate your friendship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUaImUpMt8Q&feature=related Your smile makes me remember those flowers They were quietly ever bloomed in my life I thought that I would be with you forever But today we have disappeared from this place |

Are they getting old? Are they lost? The wind blows them away, and they are everywhere…
Some stories have no ending Some feeling fade on rainy days… There may only be grass and no more flowers I am glad that I spent this summer time with you
Are they getting old? Are they lost? We are just like them and We are everywhere… ...... Mark Cottrell < Joyce Is Not Here >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFx7YuZtOmk&list=PL39318352D3B878B0
