Jazz Guitarist Karissa Muse presents Jazz, Bossa & Latin music night
Karissa Muse came on the music scene in Hong Kong after
her group won the Gold prize in the Tom Lee SoundBase
Festival, an acoustic music competition, in 2001. She has
performed regularly at various jazz clubs and live music
venues across Hong Kong and, more recently China, usually
leading her own groups. One highlight of her performances
was being the opening act for world-renowned jazz
trumpeter Toru ‘Tiger’ Okoshi. Over the years, Karissa has
performed with most top jazz musicians in Hong Kong and was a member of the Stray Katz Big Band, an 18-piece group that specializes in Dixieland, Swing, Latin and Funk music. In addition to public performances, she also lends her talents to corporate and private events such as opening ceremonies, exhibitions, weddings, balls, reception/cocktail parties, as well as designing music for drama productions. In addition to performing, she has written music reviews and musician interviews for magazines and other publications since her teenage years. These days, she writes jazz concert program booklets and articles for music magazines occasionally. Karissa’s extensive knowledge of music leads to her being invited to host the program ‘Jazzing Up’ on RTHK Radio 4 times and again. She was also the host of a live jazz talk show and music program on an Internet Television channel between 2008 and 2009.
Karissa has gained the reputation of being the only female professional jazz guitarist in Hong Kong.

The band fuses jazz, blues, country with their song choice, providing an eclectic mix of musical styles. For the performance at Joyce’s on February 19 the band will be stripped back to vocals and guitar. East of West’s repertoire ranges from the early jazz era to forgotten gems from the 50s folk boom. From the backblocks of country to Broadway you’ll find it here. They cover the songs of such artists as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Curtis Mayfield. They also include a number of choice cuts from the American songbook.
East of West, in its stripped down version is Adrienne Glad/ vocals and Chris Gordon /guitar. Performing regularly on the Hong Kong music scene in the last 12 months the group is focused on performing quality songs from diverse eras and genres. The motivation at the core of the group is to rediscover songs the suit the band’s sensibilities: tasteful, unadorned and soulful! It’s a journey through the last century of contemporary song.
